Faculty Development for Resident-as-Teachers Programs
The HMS Academy Center for Teaching and Learning is pleased to announce a new faculty development effort directed at faculty responsible for resident-as-teacher programs within the HMS hospitals. Residents have long been appreciated as vital and central teachers of HMS students in the clinical arenas, and in recent years, there has been an expansion of programs directed at assisting residents to acquire teaching skills relevant to their roles as clinical faculty. The Resident-as-Teacher Faculty Development Program will be directed at refining the skills of those directing resident-as-teacher programs.
The Program will consist of monthly 2-hour seminars held at the HMS Academy Center for Teaching and Learning, Medical Education Center, Room 384. The seminars will be facilitated by Charles Hatem, MD, Director for the CTL and invited faculty. The curriculum will draw, in part, upon materials used in Medical Education Fellowships that have been conducted over the previous decade. Importantly, the selected participants will meet to define their own educational needs and assist in the definition of the program’s material. The overall goals of the program will be directed at an examination of literature useful in the education of residents to effectively function in their role as teachers. The sessions will be one Friday a month, from 9-11 AM, with the exact dates forthcoming. There will be 10 sessions held throughout the Calendar Year (January-December), beginning in January 2010 with required assigned reading for each seminar. Participants will be offered a stipend of $250 for each session attended.
Individuals can self-apply for consideration, in which case the application must be accompanied by a letter of support from Program Director or Department/Division Chair indicating protected time to consistently attend the seminars. Individual applicants must also identify their educational goals to be achieved by their attendance at these seminars. Similarly, nominations may originate from the Program Director or Department/Division Chair convening the same degree of support. If so nominated, applicants must also supply a letter identifying their educational goals to be achieved by their attendance at these seminars. Applications are due by October 15, 2009 with notification of acceptance by mid November. A maximum of 10 positions will be offered, with a maximum of 2 selections from any given institution. It is our hope that these individuals will assist faculty from other departments in their institutions to develop and improve Resident as Teacher Programs.
